Knife guards, also known as sickle guards, are a critical wear component on the cutter bar of a combine harvester, sickle bar mower, or haybine. They are responsible for protecting, guiding, and stabilizing the reciprocating sickle sections as they cut crops, ensuring a clean and efficient harvest.
Typically forged from high-strength alloy steel and often double-heat treated, a quality knife guard is built to withstand the extreme abrasion, shock, and impact of rocks and other debris. Unlike cheaper cast iron guards, forged steel provides the necessary flexibility and toughness to serve as a “sacrificial part” bending or breaking on impact to protect the machine’s expensive cutter bar. Key features include a smooth, snag-free surface for crop flow, a hardened ledger plate for the knife section to shear against, and a design that prevents material buildup in wet or tangled conditions.
Knife guards are available as direct OEM replacements (e.g., John Deere, Case IH, New Holland) or high-quality, cost-effective aftermarket units. They come in various configurations including standard (regular), non-clog (stub), two-prong, three-prong, and double guards, to fit virtually any agricultural cutter bar. For equipment repair, seasonal maintenance, or performance restoration, quality knife guards ensure a properly aligned cutter bar, reduced downtime, and a superior cut.
